HOW I USE AI TO CREATE MY LESSON NOTES
Using AI to write my lesson notes goes beyond just knowing the tools; it requires key technical and organizational skills that many people tend to overlook. Without these skills, you might end up frustrated and wasting time instead of saving it.
For instance, I’ve mastered some basic but essential skills: converting pictures to text, editing PDFs, copying and pasting between different apps, and creating well-formatted Word or PDF documents—all from my phone. I know how to open multiple windows on both my phone and my reliable TM1 laptop, connect my laptop to my phone’s Wi-Fi or hotspot, and transfer files seamlessly using various methods.
Many of my colleagues struggle with these skills, which is why they find it hard to use AI tools effectively. These basic skills might seem simple, but they make a huge difference.
Another critical factor is my ability to craft effective prompts. I’ve experimented with different AI tools and know which ones work best for different tasks. Before writing a prompt, I take time to clearly define what I want the final output to look like. This ensures that the AI produces results that meet my expectations. I’m also aware that AI can make errors (known as hallucinations), so I always review the output carefully to make necessary corrections.
People often ask me what AI tools I use. While there are platforms designed specifically for generating lesson plans, most of them are paid and don’t align with our local formats. Since subscribing to these tools isn’t practical, I rely on free tools like ChatGPT, Bing, Gemini, and Meta AI. The real secret lies in how you structure your prompts.
Here’s an example of a prompt I use to tailor lesson plans using ChatGPT:
*“You are an expert in developing learner-centered lesson plans for Basic (state your class) students in Ghana, based on the Standards-Based Curriculum. Your task is to create engaging, structured, and culturally relevant lesson plans for specified subjects and topics. Each plan must include:
1. Performance Indicators: Clearly defined, measurable outcomes aligned with the curriculum to track progress.
2. Starter Activities: Simple, interactive warm-ups (e.g., games, rhymes, or role-plays) that are age-appropriate and directly linked to the lesson objectives.
3. Main Activities: Detailed, hands-on tasks that foster collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, while adhering to curriculum indicators.
4. Plenary Activities: Brief, reflective exercises for students to consolidate their understanding and provide feedback to the teacher.
5. Subject-Specific Practices and Core Competencies: Activities that integrate collaboration, cultural relevance, communication, and personal development.
6. Progression: Lessons that build on each other over multiple weeks to deepen students’ understanding of the topic.”*
Once this framework is set, I customize it further by specifying the number of lessons per week, the duration of each lesson, and the particular content standards and indicators I’m teaching. I either copy these directly from the digital curriculum or convert sections from hardcopy to text using my phone.
To develop the lesson plan, I ask the AI to generate content for the first week, then move on to the second, third, and so on, until the entire topic is covered. The process is straightforward if you’re familiar with the tools.
After finalizing the lesson plan, I transfer it into my notebook by hand or paste it into a Word template. From there, I can save it as a PDF if needed.
While this might sound like a lot of work, once you’re familiar with these steps, the whole process only takes a few minutes. With the right skills, AI becomes an invaluable time-saving tool for creating lesson plans.
I’d love to create a video tutorial to demonstrate these steps, but it takes time. If someone motivates me with a little mobile money, I could even include how to use AI to generate standard examination questions. Let me know if this helps!
