Exploring how teacher agency shapes the implementation of national education reforms and initial teacher education
About this Event

Join the Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre at the University of Cambridge, UK, and the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa, for a joint seminar series exploring equity, pedagogy and innovation in times of global crises.

This seminar will be held in person at the University of Cambridge from 12:00-13:00 BST and at UWC from 13:00-14:00 SAST, as well as online.

Teacher agency for change

· Dr Dawit Tibebu Tiruneh, Assistant Research Professor, REAL Centre, University of Cambridge

· Professor Thasmai Dhurumraj, Faculty of Education, University of the Western Cape (Chair)

This seminar explores how teacher agency shapes the implementation of national education reforms in the Global South, drawing on evidence from Ethiopia to show how teachers actively mediate how reforms are realised in classrooms, and with what consequences for equity. It will also explore initial teacher education in Kenya, Pakistan and Tanzania.
