Teaching Your Craft: You Have More to Share Than You Think

Has anyone ever said, “You should teach that”?

You know how to make it. But how do you teach it?

Then the questions start: Where do I even begin? What do beginners need to know first? How do I fill a two-hour class? What if I freeze up?

Knowing your craft and knowing how to teach it are two different skills, and the second one can be learned. Join us for a free, relaxed talk about what it really takes to share your craft.

This talk is for you if you…

• Get asked “How did you make that?” more than you can count

• Have been quietly thinking about teaching for a while

• Think “I’m not good enough to teach” (spoiler: you probably are)

• Would love to see someone else fall for what you love

What we’ll chat about

• The most common mistakes new teachers make, and how to avoid them

• Spotting the steps you do without thinking that trip up beginners

• The questions every new teacher should ask about supplies, setup and timing

• What makes a class memorable, not just informative

• How to start teaching at Arts Lab

• Plus: a takeaway with optional homework to start sketching out your first workshop

No teaching experience needed. Just a craft you know and a curiosity about sharing it.

About Jen Casey

Before building a career as a full-time professional photographer, Jen Casey spent more than 15 years as an educator, with a focus on art, creativity, and project-based learning. Her teaching approach emphasized hands-on exploration, creative problem-solving, and learning through making.

Teaching remained an important part of her career as a photographer. Jen taught photography and the business of photography at Anne Arundel Community College, has presented to photography groups throughout Maryland, and has developed and led numerous workshops of her own.

While photography has been her professional focus, Jen's creativity has never been limited to one medium. She also explores painting, ceramics, and other creative pursuits, bringing the curiosity of both an artist and a lifelong learner to everything she does.

With a background spanning education, artmaking, and creative entrepreneurship, Jen understands both the joy of making something and the reward of helping someone else discover how to make it themselves.

About Arts Lab of South County

Vision: To create a vibrant, nationally recognized arts destination in Southern Anne Arundel County, Maryland, where everyone can experience the life changing impact of creative expression.

Arts Lab of South County operates as a workspace where artists can create their own work and share the experience with others. Arts Lab provides dynamic interactions with the arts through our community of visual artists, open studio tours, and programs. Through our artist members and guest artists, we offer art up close, in person, and in progress. Artists work in oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, pencils, glass, ceramic, metal/jewelry, fiber arts, stone, plastic and more. We aim to create value for Southern Anne Arundel County residents through classes, lectures, and other community events.

Arts Lab of South County is supported in part by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Maryland State Arts Council, Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area, The Cynipid Project, Dippel & Co., and Herrington Harbour North.
