Activity definitions and requirements

Kina Harvesting :

Are you confident in the water and have strong snorkelling skills? We would love for you to join us as a community volunteer to help remove kina off a portion of the reef at Te Kohuroa. The purpose of removing kina is to assist in growing back the kelp forests that help sustain a diversity of life on the reef, whilst working towards long term and sustain protection for the reef so that it can thrive (including the kina) for many years to come. Suitable for 12 year olds and up, children younger than 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult in the water. Snorkelling gear can be provided for free including wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, and gloves.

Kina counting and data collection:

Prefer to stay on land? Why not assist us in kina counting and data recording. A critical part of the Te Kohuroa Rewilding Initiative is to gather information about the reef and the restoration activities being carried out in order to understand what state the reef is currently in and what impact active restoration will have. Suitable for 5 year olds and up, children younger than 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Guided Snorkel tour :

Wanting to see what lies beneth the surface at Te Kohuroa? Join us for a free guided snorkel with our experienced snorkel guides and discover the wildlife that call this reef home. Learn about the efforts to restore the kelp forests of Te Kohuroa first hand, whilst having fun in the water. All snorkel gear including wetsuit, fins, mask and snorkel are provided for free. Suitable for 4 year olds and up, all ability levels welcome. Children younger than 15 years old must be accompnaied in the water by an audlt.

Guided stream walk :

Want to learn about the beautiful Te Kohuroa awa that flows into the bay? Join our team of freshwater scientists assisting the community in monitoring and restoring this awa from the mountains to the sea. Discover what critters call this awa home and what we can do to help look after this special waterway. Suitable for 5 year olds and up, children younger than 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Please note you must be able to walk over uneven terrain for up to 1.5km.
