Following a 2022 USAJOBS initiative to introduce remote work designations, the US Office of Personnel Management conducted an analysis of job postings from August to December 2022, focusing on the 10 job series with the highest proportion of remote announcements. Within this sample, remote positions attracted significantly more applications (366 versus 51 for non-remote roles) across diverse demographic groups and showed a 6 percentage point higher likelihood of candidate selection. These promising findings suggest remote work designations could be a powerful tool for transforming federal recruitment and workforce diversity, pointing to opportunities for broader implementation of remote work policies across government agencies.
