On Saturday, May 2, the Metropolitan Opera presents Eugene Onegin live to theaters worldwide. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin is a poignant opera about the tragic consequences of missed opportunities and social conventions, in which a young woman’s initial rejection leads to a reversal of fortune and lifelong regret.
Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met to sing the role of Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this operatic adaptation of Pushkin. Baritone Igor Golovatenko is the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late in the production by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner. Timur Zangiev conducts the May 2 performance, which will be transmitted live from the Met stage to cinemas worldwide.
Tchaikovsky’s universally beloved melodic gifts are at their most powerful and multilayered in this opera, featuring rich ensembles, buoyant dance numbers, and some of the most striking vocal solos in the repertory.
