Join Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site in Mesilla, New Mexico, on Sat., April 18, 2 - 3 p.m. for a presentation by Rick Hendricks, the New Mexico State Records Administrator, about a dramatic conflict between Father José de Jesús Baca, the priest of San Albino in Mesilla, and Vicar Apostolic Jean Baptiste Salpointe of Tucson, AZ in the 1870s.The struggle came about because ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the Mesilla Valley and El Paso regions was being transferred from Santa Fe to Tucson. As French clergy replaced local Hispanic priests, Catholics in the region felt threatened by the changes.
Rick Hendricks previously served for nine years as state historian before becoming the State Records Administrator. He worked at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University for a total of 27 years. He received his Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico in 1985. He has published extensively on the history of New Mexico and Mexico.
The lecture takes place at the Mesilla Community Center and is free. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.
