TAYAN arrives at Smalls on August 23 in a newly expanded quartet format, bringing together saxophone, electronics, bass and drums for an open-ended night of improvisation and spontaneous interaction. The project first appeared as a trio with Teerus Laohverapanich, Mahakit Mahaniranon and Yuji Ishihara; for this Smalls performance, Ratanapong Phumloyfah joins on bass, adding another layer of texture, resonance and movement to the group’s sound.
Rather than working from fixed arrangements, TAYAN builds each performance through deep listening and real-time response. Jazz improvisation, electroacoustic sound, ambient textures, free rhythm and contemporary composition all feed into a set where form develops in the moment, with each player shaping and reshaping the direction of the music as it unfolds.

Teerus Laohverapanich is a Bangkok saxophonist, improviser and educator whose work moves between jazz, free improvisation and contemporary experimental music. An Assistant Professor at the Conservatory of Music, Rangsit University, his academic and performance work has focused extensively on improvisational language, thematic development and modern approaches to saxophone performance.

Mahakit Mahaniranon is a Thai composer, improviser and electronic musician working with piano, modular synthesizer and electroacoustic sound. Ratanapong Phumloyfah is a Bangkok double bassist active across contemporary jazz, free improvisation and experimental composition. His work includes projects with Parames Pipattanasuporn, Rinruthai and The Third Passage, where deep listening, resonance, space and spontaneous interaction are central to the music. His addition to TAYAN expands the original trio into a new quartet version for this Smalls appearance.
🥁 Yuji Ishihara – Drums & Percussion
Yuji Ishihara is a Japanese percussionist and improviser whose work extends far beyond conventional drumming. His approach uses rhythm, texture, noise and physical sound as equal parts of the performance, moving freely between free improvisation and experimental ensemble work. Active in both Japan and Bangkok, he brings an unpredictable and highly responsive rhythmic voice to TAYAN.
