Join the Somerville Museum for A Growing Black Community: Life and Labor in West Somerville, 1900–1920, presented by historian Maddie Short.
For much of the 20th century, a neighborhood just west of Davis Square was home to a growing Black community. New homes on inexpensive land attracted Black migrants and immigrants from the American South, Nova Scotia, and the West Indies, who lived alongside European immigrants, particularly Italian families.
Discover the stories of early residents of Cameron Avenue, Elmwood Street, and Harrison Street, and explore the intertwined histories of migration, labor, community, and the city streets themselves.
