Tarot and Community Building | Matthew López-Jensen and Chiquita Brujita
About this Event
On Sunday, November 8, 4PM, Artbook @ MoMA PS1 presents artist and writer Matthew López-Jensen in conversation with Chiquita Bruijita, founder of the Brooklyn Brujeria Festival. The event celebrates the launch of López-Jensen’s and Chiquita Brujita’s sixth fall festival.
Tarot as a form of creative expression is experiencing renewed interest within museum, artistic, and publishing circles. Tarot’s origin as a teaching tool predates its current association with divination by several hundred years. Street Tree Tarot touches both histories and is a celebration of New York City’s street trees and the many acts of stewardship that help nearly 700,000 trees thrive. The recently published deck has its origin as a form of public engagement and storytelling. Meanwhile, tarot also played an important role in the creation of the Brooklyn Brujeria Festival, recently celebrating its ninth iteration.
López-Jensen and Chiquita Brujita will share the backstories behind their work and discuss how centering community and storytelling has been central to their practices.
Both will offer versions of one-on-one tarot readings with guests after the Q&A.
