There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God…
And there is a river, too, which flows beneath our city, once thundering through the centre and now bubbling below the surface. In the year 525, Saint Deiniol came to the banks of the river Tarannon, between Snowdonia and the sea, and settled there, founding a community that became a Cathedral, and that flourishes to this day.
Tarannon is the Cathedral’s Festival of Religion and the Arts - a bustling five days in October teeming with music, poetry, visual art, history, worship, discussion and conversation in the heart of Bangor.
Our focus on rivers and our environment, both in Bangor and further afield, is prompted by the Archbishop of Wales’ highlighting of the crisis facing Wales’ rivers and waterways, as he prepares for the Restoring Welsh Rivers Summit in November.
With this year’s theme ‘There Is A River’, we cast our minds back to ‘There Was A Garden’ when, throughout our Holy Week devotions, the poetry of RS Thomas led us on a journey through the Passion and Cross to the Resurrection. In this festival of Tarannon, the river itself leads us on a voyage through the history and heritage of our country and our city; through encounter with one another, with our environment, and with God.

Y mae afon a'i ffrydiau'n llawenhau dinas Duw…
A mae afon, hefyd, sy'n llifo o dan ein dinas, unwaith yn taranu trwy'r canol ac yn awr yn byrlymu o dan yr wyneb. Yn y flwyddyn 525, daeth Deiniol Sant i lan yr afon Tarannon, rhwng y mynyddoedd a’r môr, ac ymgartrefu yno, gan sefydlu cymuned a ddaeth yn Gadeirlan, ac sydd yn ffynnu hyd heddiw.
Tarannon yw Gŵyl Cred a’r Celfyddydau newydd y Gadeirlan – pump diwrnod byrlymus ym mis Hydref sy’n gyforiog o gerddoriaeth, barddoniaeth, celf, hanes, addoliad, trafodaeth a sgwrs yng nghanol Bangor.
Mae ein ffocws ar afonydd a’n hamgylchedd, ym Mangor a thu hwnt, yn cael ei ysgogi gan amlygiad Archesgob Cymru o’r argyfwng sy’n wynebu afonydd a dyfrffyrdd Cymru, wrth iddo baratoi ar gyfer Uwchgynhadledd Adfer Afonydd Cymru ym mis Tachwedd.
Gyda’r thema eleni ‘Y Mae Afon’, rydym yn bwrw ein meddyliau yn ôl at ‘Yr Oedd Gardd’ pan, trwy gydol ein hymroddiadau Wythnos Sanctaidd, bu barddoniaeth RS Thomas yn ein harwain ar daith trwy’r Dioddefaint a’r Groes i’r Atgyfodiad. Yn yr wyl hon o Tarannon, y mae yr afon ei hun yn ein harwain ar fordaith trwy hanes ac etifeddiaeth ein gwlad a'n dinas; trwy gyfarfyddiad â'n gilydd, â'n ham- gylchedd, ac â Duw.
