Tamir Kalifa & Jazmin Cazares with Felt Out at Cherrywood Center
About this Event
Join us at the Cherrywood Center on Friday June 26 for an intimate evening of song, story and visuals featuring photojournalist/ musician Tamir Kalifa and Jazmin Cazares with a special performance by Felt Out. Doors 6:30pm, music 7:30pm. $10 suggested donation.
Tamir and Jazmin will be performing Witness, a multimedia project inspired by Tamir’s reporting that invites audiences into the intimate moments behind the news headlines. Through live projections and music, Tamir weaves his original songs with his images, tracing stories of migration, survival, loss, and hope in a powerful, immersive experience.
Tamir’s work has been published widely in The New York Times, Texas Monthly, NPR and others and his intimate documentation of the families in Uvalde, Texas, after the Robb Elementary School shooting earned him recognition from the Chris Hondros Fund and the American Mosaic Journalism Prize.
Jazmin Cazares was born and raised in Uvalde and recently graduated with a degree in Psychology at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. After her little sister, Jackie, was killed in the Robb Elementary shooting, Jazmin became a gun violence prevention activist, organizing rallies, testifying before Congress and speaking publicly across America. In 2023 she was recognized as a Girls Leading Change Honoree by former First Lady Jill Biden and was her guest to the State of the Union in 2024. Jazmin is also the President of Jackie’s Loving Hands, a non-profit that raises funds for veterinary scholarships in memory of her sister, who wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up.
Felt Out is the ongoing creative exploration of Sowmya Somanath and Walter Nichols. Using a mixture of synth, field recordings, acoustic instruments, and an obsession with music's purity born out of training in multi-classical systems, the pair deeply explores melody and harmony, unstuck from genre, honoring their ever-changing world.
Felt Out’s DIY spirit has long fueled their exploration of experimental visuals. For this show, the pair will present 16mm film projection capturing the tactile themes of their music.
