In cooperation with Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) Estonian Centre for Architecture has created a special walking tour to introduce Estonian architecture as seen through the 'camera eye'.
We will set out to explore different exciting areas and sites in Tallinn that have inspired film directors from Estonia and abroad over the course of time, hopefully also offering ideas and inspiration for future filmmakers.
Our journey starts at the Rotermann Quarter, which has undergone astonishing change since the shooting of Andrei Tarkovsky's movie “Stalker”. The imaginative, isolated and somewhat apocalyptic 'Zone' in the Stalker movie has by now become one of the most contemporary districts in Tallinn, where old heritage is masterfully combined with new architecture.
Thereafter the tour will continue towards Tallinn Creative Hub, a former power plant which has become one of the most unique modern event centres in the Baltic region after the conversion and renovation. There you can still see the ‘UN sign’ painted on chimney of the building for the “Stalker” movie – in the movie that marked the entrance to the 'Zone'.
We will wind up the tour at the Linnahall Concert Hall, where the shooting of Christopher Nolan's spy thriller “Tenet” took place and where the movie “The Last Watchpost” by Estonia's director Tanel Toom has also been filmed. However, the future of Linnahall as a legendary architectural landmark remains unclear: there are some people who wish this building to be erased to the ground, while the vast majority still recognize the uniqueness and value of this place and hope that it will be preserved for future generations.
The tour is a walking tour and lasts for 120 minutes (2 hours), the distance of the tour is approximately 3 km. The tour takes place in Estonian, Russian and English.
