Join us ON SITE at the Barnes Museum in Southington on Saturday, May 18th from 11:00-1:00 for a tour of the 15-room historic house (1836) led by their curator, Christina Volpe. The Barnes Museum is renowned as a historic house museum and center for the study of 19th-century material culture and decorative arts. Boasting a display of over 500 pressed glass goblets in their conservatory, their mission is to preserve and promote the Bradley/Barnes Homestead, its unique collections and archives, and its gardens and grounds in ways that educate and engage current and future generations. Additionally, we’ll delve into recent successful programming efforts that have enhanced the museum’s visibility, offering attendees a glimpse into new strategies for public engagement. Christina Volpe is an historian and curator specializing in the captivating era of the Gilded Age. With a focus on Connecticut’s role in the second industrial revolution and the material culture of the time, Volpe’s expertise stems from her degrees in archaeology and classics from the American University of Rome and an MA in public history from Central Connecticut State University. Her previous roles include serving as an assistant curator and archivist for prominent family archives, and she has contributed her knowledge to esteemed institutions such as the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Barnes Museum, where she assumed the role of curator in 2021. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Humanities from Salve Regina University.
