About this Event

Join us on Friday 11th September in the Museum at 2pm, as we discover how the young botanist who sailed with Captain Cook on the Endeavour explored and documented plants from Brazil to Australia, shaping the study of natural history.

Sir Joseph Banks Bt (1743-1820) of Revesby Abbey, Lincolnshire, first discovered botany as a student at Oxford and then conducted research on the collections of the Chelsea Physic Garden and the British Museum. Aged only 25, Banks joined Captain Cook's great Endeavour voyage and explored the plants of Brazil, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. This illustrated talk will explore Banks’s discoveries.

Information about the speakers: Mark James FLS and Dr Anke Timmermann FLS are antiquarian book specialists and Fellows of the Linnean Society based in Grantham. They share some 50 years of experience in research on rare books and manuscripts, with a specialism in travel and natural history.
