The Seminar Committee, Department of History invites you all to a talk on “Historically Speaking: On the Sacred Geography of Hindustan” by Raziuddin Aquil
Details:
Date - 27 August 2025
Time - 3.30 pm onwards
Venue - Room 6, Satyakam Bhawan, near Social Sciences building
This lecture will focus on the speaker’s two recent book projects which are aimed at a detailed discussion of religious practices in medieval and early modern India. The presence of powerful spiritual masters and the political domain seeking to exploit religious symbols are enduring features of India’s history. Critical negotiations in premodern religious interactions and occasional tensions and violence as well as political resolution of crucial issues around questions of identities have become hot topics in modern times. History has, thus, become hostage to modern ideological wrangling and identity contestations. In such contexts, it is important that historians intervene for a more informed kind of discussion of what happened in the past even when some aspects of the past appear problematic from the point of view of peaceful community relations in the present. The talk will address some of these concerns.
