Talisman is Swansea's longest-running poetry & spoken word open mic night, expertly curated by Rebecca Lowe. Held on the last Thursday of the month anyone can sign up, and featured poets are a regular feature. Sign up from 7.30pm ahead of readings starting at 8pm.
This month's featured poet is Kirsty Rowles. Kirsty Rowles (she/her) is a writer originally from Eastleigh, Hampshire, who has made Swansea her home. Following her masters degree in English Literature, Kirsty has dedicated herself to the third sector, in a role she often refers to as 'professional nice person'.
She is an avid disability advocate and dedicates herself to improving accessibility for those around her. After losing her younger sister Hannah to sepsis last year, Kirsty has poured herself into an achingly beautiful and raw poetry collection. 'Ask Me About My Dead Sister' is an earnest and, in places, darkly comic, collection of poems, that puts a real face on grief and challenges the taboos and social euphemisms that surround it. Readers have described the work as "love-made-paper" and "harrowing in the depiction of grief".
Join her at the next Talisman as she opens her heart to show you how to love, and what comes after. 'Ask Me About My Dead Sister' will be available to buy on the night for £3.50, with all proceeds going to The UK Sepsis Trust.
