What's Take Back the Night?Historically, Take Back the Night (TBTN) was a women-only protest in response to incidents of sexual violence in the 1970s and 80s. Women would gather, march and rally to advocate for women's safety when walking down the street. There are many ways in which TBTN has evolved and this year SAC Brant has decided that all genders will be welcome to gather with us to Take Back the Night.
We understand that women-only marches were important in many ways: to create safety, create space, create connection and to emphasize the violence that women would experience were often at the hands of men who hold social dominance in society. In some ways, however, it has created barriers for Two-spirit, transgender, non-binary, gender-diverse folks and men who experience different forms of oppression to feel embraced by the feminist and anti-violence movement and contribute to the social change. In order to create an environment free from the questioning of anyone's gender and environment that recognizes that one does not have to experience gendered oppression to experience sexual violence, we will be welcoming all survivors and anyone who is committed to creating a world free from violence.
Over the next couple weeks, we will provide more information about what you can expect at TBTN and how to create safety when attending the gathering. Of course, we will also announce when you can join us before TBTN to make signs and meet other folks who will be attending.
