Experience Tagore’s music anew in a captivating, mostly instrumental concert where Subhadrakalyan, Moisilee Dutta, and Labonya Chaudhuri weave Indian and Western classical sounds into fresh, inviting interpretations of his timeless melodies.
Reinterpreting the rich musical world of Rabindranath Tagore, this evening journeys through the melodic, rhythmic, and cultural intricacies of his compositions by blending Indian classical and Western classical traditions. Subhadrakalyan (Tabla Tarang), Moisilee Dutta (Sarod), and Labonya Chaudhuri (Piano) collaborate to highlight the evocative qualities of Tagore’s works, moving seamlessly between vocal and instrumental expressions with a focus on melody.
The evening moves in three distinct segments: ‘Shringara' conjures the romance of Raag Yaman, combining Tagore’s originals, traditional bandishes, and improvisation, primarily from the Puja category, enhanced by alaap, jor, and jhala. ‘Ode to Desh’ celebrates Raag Desh, opening with a full rendition of Vande Mataram to mark its 150th year, then weaving in monsoon songs and a tarana for a vivid musical tapestry. ‘The Many Moods of Bengal’ pays homage to the region’s folk heritage, presenting both Tagore’s folk-inspired pieces and the traditional songs that influenced him, culminating in a rhythmic crescendo featuring tabla-tarang and ensemble.
With select songs performed as instrumentals and others sung for accessibility, the concert offers an immersive, genre-crossing experience that brings new context and colour to Tagore’s timeless music.
This performance is supported by Reliance Foundation.
