From autonomous weapons, to swarm drones and AI-driven surveillance and decision-making, the use of AI in military and security sectors is swiftly gaining momentum. The rise of Artificial Intelligence is often thought of as particularly concerning in these domains. Are we correct to be worried, or should AI mostly been seen as a promising opportunity for national and international defense? Join us for this symposium where experts in AI, security, defense, and ethics will break down the real-world impact of AI in warfare and security.

AI is transforming military capabilities, creating more efficient and effective defense operations. But with these advancements come critical ethical questions that we must confront. Who is accountable when AI makes a mistake? If a self-operating AI drone targets the wrong area or person, who bears the responsibilityโhuman operators, developers, or the AI itself? Can we truly trust AI to make life-and-death decisions?
๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ด๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐
AI is also making significant contributions to national security. Predictive policing and advanced surveillance systems are helping authorities to prevent crime and manage crises more effectively. But how to balance these innovations with the ethical concerns they raise? Could the lack of transparency and accountability in AI-based decisions undermine justice and fairness in society? What safeguards can be put in place to challenge these decisions?

Roy Lindelauf is a Full Professor at the Department of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence at Tilburg University. He is also chair Data Science in Military Operations at the Faculty of Military Sciences at Netherlands Defense Academy, and head of the Data Science Center of Excellence at Netherlands Ministry of Defense. With a wealth of expertise in security-related AI applications, Dr. Lindelauf is a sought-after speaker on the strategic use of AI in military contexts. Currently, his focus is on the STEADFAST project in which he is investigating swarms of miniscule drones that can operate (semi-)autonomously under human guidance in both military and civilian missions.
