What is Swing Dancing?
Swing dancing is a family of partner dances that stem from African-American cultural innovations — specifically the musical and movement traditions that developed from the late 1800s through the 1960s.
Jazz, blues, and r&b didn't just change the way people listened to music. It changed the way they moved to it.
The dances that sprouted from this rhythmic tradition would go by the names of Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Charleston, Balboa, Shag, and many other region-specific styles. They all share a common foundation: syncopated rhythm, improvisation, call-and-response, and a focus on individuality within a partnership.
