This progressive series introduces children (ages 6-12) to aerial yoga through playful exploration, building strength, flexibility, and confidence while developing fundamental aerial skills in a safe, supportive environment.
Week 1: Ground Control & Sky Safety
Theme: "Meeting Your Flying Carpet"
Focus: Hammock familiarization, safety rules, basic body awareness
Skills: Sitting in hammock, gentle swaying, supported standing
Poses: Hammock swing, supported mountain pose, easy seated spinal twists
Games: "Red light/green light" with hammock movement, "Follow the leader"
Goal: Comfort and trust with the hammock, understanding boundaries
Week 2: Gentle Takeoffs
Theme: "First Flight Lessons"
Focus: Basic inversions, core engagement, spatial awareness
Skills: Supported back bends, gentle inversions with feet on ground
Poses: Supported fish pose, gentle back bend in hammock, modified downward dog
Games: "Airplane poses," "Upside-down peek-a-boo"
Goal: Introduction to being upside-down safely
Week 3: Flying Creatures
Theme: "Animal Adventures in the Air"
Focus: Dynamic movement, strength building, creative expression
Skills: Flowing transitions, supported balancing, coordinated movements
Poses: Flying butterfly, supported warrior poses, hammock boat pose
Games: "Animal charades" in hammocks, "Migration patterns" flowing sequence
Goal: Building strength while maintaining playfulness
Week 4: Sky Acrobats
Theme: "Circus Stars in Training"
Focus: Controlled inversions, core strength, coordination
Skills: Full inversions with support, basic wrapping techniques
Poses: Supported shoulder stand, flying pigeon, wrapped warrior III
Games: "Circus performance" routines, partner mirroring
Goal: Developing inversion confidence and advanced wrapping skills
Week 5: Cloud Dancing
Theme: "Floating Through the Clouds"
Focus: Flow sequences, grace, combining learned skills
Skills: Smooth transitions, independent poses, creative combinations
Poses: Flying sequences, supported splits, floating forward folds
Games: "Cloud storytelling" through movement, "Rain dance" sequences
Goal: Linking poses together with confidence and creativity
Week 6: Sky Masters Showcase
Theme: "Graduation Flight Show"
Focus: Demonstrating progress, celebrating achievements, performance
Skills: Student-chosen favorite poses, creative sequences
Poses: Review and refine all learned poses, create personal "flight routines"
Games: "Sky show" performance for families, "Teaching moment" peer sharing
Goal: Celebrating progress and inspiring continued practice
