A chocolate mill opened outside Boston in the late 1700s, setting the stage for New England’s enduring love affair with sweets. Over the following centuries, the region has become home to an extraordinary variety of baked, fried, dipped, sugared, and frozen confections.
Back from her third year as a judge at the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, author Susan Mara Bregman will share stories from her latest book, New England Sweets: Doughnuts, Bonbons, and Whoopie Pies, about this sugary legacy – including Maine favorites like Needhams, Bangor Taffy, and (of course!) whoopie pies.

After a career in transportation research and policy, Susan Bregman has returned to her first love – writing books and taking photographs – with a focus on New England nostalgia.
Susan has written five books for Arcadia Publishing: New England Neon, New England Candlepin Bowling, Along Route 1: Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, and New England Sweets: Doughnuts, Bonbons, and Whoopie Pies. Her most recent title -- Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market -- came out on June 2.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Brown University with a concentration in linguistics and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from the Harvard Kennedy School. Susan loves roadside attractions, plastic lawn flamingos, mahjong, and – of course – New England’s classic sweets and treats. She lives in Boston.
