An intimate conversation (with sweet tastes) with Natalie Paull to celebrate the release of her new book Sweet Heart
About this Event

Natalie Paull is one of our favourite authors — and one of our favourite customers, too.

We’ve known Nat for almost as long as we’ve owned our bookstore. Over the years, we’ve loved introducing her to books we cherish, delighting in her cooking and baking around town, crying when her cult bakery, Beatrix, closed, and cheering loudly (and baking furiously) to celebrate the publication of her first book, Beatrix Bakes.

Nat very kindly let us launch both her first book and then her second, Another Slice, to great acclaim. Full of warmth, comfort and delicious cake, they are books we love recommending and selling to beginner and experienced bakers alike. Fulsome, beautifully written instructions thoughtfully guide any baker towards a better bake, enhancing Nat’s delicious — and often brilliant — recipes. If you want to bake cake, Natalie Paull is your guide. Nay, your baking goddess.

So it was with enormous excitement that we received an advance copy of Natalie’s third book, due out in September: Sweet Heart.

Rest assured: if you bake, you need this book, too.

The eight chapters organise Nat’s new collection of recipes by flavour: fruity; dark, bitter and sticky; tart n’ tangy; creamy; nutty; yeasty; fluffy and flakey; and spicy. And it’s not just cake. There are bars, biscuits, scones, cookies, mousses, creams, jellies, doughnuts, crullers and more.

Every recipe offers options for adapting, hints for perfecting and tips that will make you a better baker and your baking even more delicious. And, as always, Natalie generously shares her hard-won baking expertise in a detailed glossary packed with invaluable hints and tips.

We are so excited to invite you to another intimate conversation with Natalie Paull. As always, there will be tastes from the book.

Please join us as we celebrate the release of Natalie Paull’s latest beautiful book on baking, Sweet Heart.

FAQs

Will the event be held outside?

Yes, subject to weather, the event will be held under the Market sheds behind our bookstore. We recommend dressing warmly.

Will the tastes prepared by you cater for food allergies?

Unfortunately no. We will choose tastes from the book that suit most people, but the recipes can't be altered to cater for food allergies. Tastes will include gluten, eggs, dairy and nuts

Can I buy books by Natalie Paull?

Yes Natalie's books will be available for purchase on the night.

Can I bring a book I purchased elsewhere to be signed?

We would rather you didn't. We subsidise our events and buying a book from us makes our events sustainable. If you do bring a book purchased elsewhere, please consider supporting our events program by buying another book

I can't attend the event, can I buy/pre-order a signed copy of the book?

Yes. Copies will be available for signing and purchase on the night. If you can't attend, we can organise to post signed and personalised copies to you. Please call to arrange.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

If you haven't visited the bookstore for a few years, please note we have moved to the northern side of the Queen Victoria Market. Our address is 115-121 Victoria Street (next to A Shed)

We recommend public transport.

The 19, 20, 57, 59 (Elizabeth St)and 55 (William & Peel St) trams go past the Queen Victoria Market and run frequently. We are in the Free Tram Zone and are a short 50m walk from the Elizabeth St Queen Victoria Market stop and the Peel St Queen Victoria Market stop. The new Victoria St stop is directly in front of the bookshop. State Library, Parkville, Melbourne Central and Flagstaff railway stations are two blocks away.

If driving, there is plenty of metered parking on Queen St near the corner of Victoria St. There is also limited parking on Victoria Street outside the store.

What is the refund policy?

Tickets are not refundable.

Is my registration/ticket transferable?

Yes - to another person - just have them present your ticket on the evening.

I have a ticket but can't attend.

Space and tickets are limited. We will have a waiting list. If you can't attend having booked, please either give your ticket to someone else or let us know so we can issue your ticket to the next person on the wait list.
