About this Event
About this event
Turn your backyard into a beautiful, wildlife-attracting haven using stunning and hardy native plants.
Learn how to grow your own food, and ways to create habitat for local wildlife, from Ipswich people just like you.
Join us for the morning session of the Sustainable Open Garden Trail, presented by Ipswich City Council’s Habitat Gardens program.
For one day only, 3 local gardeners will open their suburban gardens to the public and share their passion and knowledge for gardening.
Locations
Booval
Venture past the tall wooden fence to find a thriving food forest in the middle of the suburbs. Bit by bit, the lawn at Jason’s home is being swallowed by a bounty-filled edible food garden. Jason’s garden also showcases how to successfully grow a variety of plants in pots, often important for those with limited space, or living in rental properties.
Yamanto
In only three years, gardener Jane has created a beautiful cottage garden using mostly free plants from Council’s Nursery in Queens Park. You will find a range of established trees and see how she has been able to fill in spaces using native shrubs and ground-cover plants to try and attract local birds to her garden.
Brassall
Richard and Judy run a local business on a six hectare industrial property in Brassall. Since 2020, they now have 1.5 hectares dedicated to land restoration, with a particular focus on the section that connects to Mihi Creek. In just under four years they have installed more that 1,000 plants, installed nest boxes for microbats, small parrots and phascogales and have created a small wetland area to slow storm-water run off.
