Sustainable Home Tour!

Sustain DuPage presents a tour of Prairie Sun Home, led by its owner, Pat Armstrong.

In 1983, Pat and her husband designed and built their home, Prairie Sun, to harmonize with the natural ecosystems of northern Illinois. This energy-efficient home utilizes both active and passive solar energy, and is landscaped with over 300 species of native trees, shrubs, prairie grasses, and wildflowers.

This tour will feature the following:

• details about how the colors, interior and exterior designs were chosen to reflect our local geology and ecosystems
• a breakdown of the many features of construction and design that make the house super-insulated and energy-efficient
• how airflow in the home creates passive cooling in summertime
• architectural elements that create passive heating in the wintertime
• How the landscaping of the home enhances sustainability through water conservation, wind protection, and heating and cooling
• A breakdown of the features of the roof, including green roof design, shingles made from recycled aluminum cans, solar panels, rain chains, and long scuppers
• A peek at Pat's vast collections and libraries featuring records on native plants and animals, fossils, mountain climbing, and world travels, as well as her body of work as an educator and writer.
