About An Uncertain Age. . .
The years following the Black Death were an age of uncertainty...and opportunity. Newly widowed Margaret Surteys startles the village by taking over her husband's brewery and seizing her only chance for independence despite her advanced age and the opposition of the powerful Reeve. She also takes on her abandoned step-granddaughter, who has plans of her own.
As the business grows, they must battle official pressures and a mysterious string of serious mishaps at the brewery. Suspecting organized sabotage and a link to more than one death, they hatch a scheme to catch the culprit, which ends in disaster. Margaret must risk her livelihood and newfound autonomy to save the child she has come to love.
Susan B. Nolen is a writer of historical and contemporary suspense. She lives in a multigenerational, multispecies household in the wilds of Kitsap County, Washington. After years on the UW faculty, researching and writing about identity and motivation in social context, she now writes novels and short stories about women making space for themselves in a patriarchal world. It's way more fun. An Uncertain Age is her first novel. Visit her at sbnolen.com.
Peter Mountford is the author of the novels A Young Man's Guide to Late Capitalism (Washington State Book Award), and The Dismal Science (NYT editor's choice). His work has appeared in the New York Times (Modern Love), Paris Review, Southern Review, The Atlantic, The Sun, Ploughshares, and Guernica. He teaches at University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe's MFA, and through Mountford Writing.
