This talk will explore Surrey, suffrage and the arts pre-World War I, discussing women’s role in the Arts and Crafts Movement, and its intersections with the women’s suffrage campaign that gathered momentum in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Exploring a range of works, from banners to badges, this talk shows how women artists and craftswomen created striking symbols and colourways with an awareness of their powerful political potential. It discusses women artists such as Mary Watts, Gertrude Jekyll, Phoebe Traquair, and the Brackenbury sisters to illuminate Surrey’s important place in early feminist history.
Dr Lucy Ella Rose is Lecturer in Victorian literature at the University of Surrey, with a special interest in visual culture and women’s suffrage. Her first book, Suffragist Artists in Partnership: Gender, Word and Image (Edinburgh University Press, 2018), focuses on Evelyn and William De Morgan, as well as Mary and George Watts, as marital creative partnerships. Rose is now writing her second book on sisters and sisterhood at the fin de siècle.
