A meta-narrative from master of handheld camerawork director Lou Ye (An Unfinished Film), we are taken into a story of crime and romance as if swimming through the murky grey waters of industrial riverside Shanghai. Lush and intimate, the story unfolds like a crumpled letter. As fantasies of love, escape and freedom intermingle, we wonder: Who was the girl I loved? Where did she go? What happened to the me that she loved? Did she really become a mermaid like she said she would?
