Participants will engage in up to six competitive debate rounds. Every attendee may choose to debate individually or as part of a two person team. Spectators play a central role by judging and scoring the rounds based on clarity, logic, strategy, and overall persuasion.
The night begins with a crowd driven topic submission process. Anyone may propose a topic. The room then votes to select the topics that will be used. Expect debates that range across political questions, philosophical puzzles, ethical dilemmas, scientific challenges, and cultural issues. The featured highlight topic for Portland is the following:
“Modern democracy has become more theatrical than representative, shaping public belief more than it reflects it.”
Debaters rotate opponents throughout the evening. This structure exposes everyone to new styles of reasoning and new approaches to difficult issues. When time allows, the final portion of the event is a feedback and community reflection session where participants discuss the strongest arguments and share what they learned.
