About this Event
Welcome to Coffee Classes at Wallflower! Coffee 101 is an educational, immersive journey into where coffee comes from, how top taste and brew it properly, and how to select the right coffee for you. Coffee 101 is the first in a series of classes built around sharing knowledge and raising coffee's value through palate development and brewing fundamentals.
In Coffee 101, we’ll demystify coffee’s complexity without getting lost in jargon, starting with what coffee is and what determines its quality and flavor. From there, we’ll focus on the fundamentals that drive brewing quality: ratio, evenness, grind size, brew time, temperature, and water (because most of your cup is water). You’ll learn how to recognize common problems like uneven extraction and how small adjustments (especially grind and time) change flavor balance.
We’ll also cover practical buying guidance: what roasters are aiming for, why “good” can mean different things to different people, and how to select coffee based on roast style, flavor expectations, and how you plan to brew. The goal is simple: tasting is believing. You’ll leave with a repeatable brewing approach, a clearer palate vocabulary, and a straightforward method for selecting coffee you’ll genuinely enjoy at home.
This class is taught by specialty coffee expert Andrew Bettis. With 15 years experience in coffee roasting, quality control, barista training, cafe ownership, coffee competitions, and coffee equipment R&D, Andrew brings a rounded approach that breaks down coffee's most impactful characteristics without getting lost in the weeds. You can learn more about Andrew's consulting work at cerisecollective.com.
