About this Event
Join us for a rare screening of the documentary SUPER EIGHT (1986, Axion Films) directed by Jo Comino.
This film celebrates a generation of artists who adopted Super 8 as the primary medium of their practice. At a time when Super 8 was widely seen as a format for domestic video, these makers re-appropriated it to expand how we think about moving-image work. SUPER EIGHT brings together artists from across the UK and Europe, capturing a moment when experimental film and underground culture intersected.
The documentary includes footage of one of the last remaining Super 8 suppliers in Keighley, squat artist co-operatives in Berlin, and appearances are made by Derek Jarman and a young Grayson Perry. For those with an ear for music and original soundtracks, the film is also scored by the band COIL.
Super 8 and film more broadly continue to inspire members of the Amoeba Photography Network. Ela Skorska, who is featured in the current exhibition, produced an experimental black-and-white Super 8 film. The format frequently came up in conversations at our Amoeba Socials, and this screening felt like the perfect opportunity to share this rare documentary here at Stockroom.
