London duo Dusky, aka Nick Harriman and Alfie Granger-Howell, have spent over a decade together making music. They met at sixth form in Camden - Harriman went on to study music production, while Granger-Howell studied composition. Bonding over a shared love of pirate radio and the 90s electronica and happy hardcore that soundtracked their adolescence, they began experimenting with production and DJing. Before long, they released a few tracks with Anjunadeep under the name Solarity, before evolving their sound and settling into their musical identity as Dusky.
Early support from the likes of Pete Tong for Stick by This and Loefah for Flo Jam helped secure them fans in both the mainstream and the electronic underground - a balance they’ve continued to strike across their releases. An early run of EPs followed, including their Careless EP, which gained further tastemaker support and launched their DJ career. They soon became headliners everywhere from Berlin’s Panorama Bar to London’s Fabric, while also earning a nomination for BBC Essential Mix of the Year.
In 2015, Dusky were nominated for Best Breakthrough and Best House/Garage/Deep House DJ by IDMA Awards. Their debut album Stick by This was followed by 2016’s Outer, their major label debut on Polydor, which featured their collaboration with Wiley (Sort It Out Sharon) and the single Ingrid Is a Hybrid. In support of that album, they developed a live show and took it on the road - winning Best Live Act at the DJ Mag Best of British Awards 2016, and were nominated for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix of the Year (2016). Releases on respected labels like Running Back followed, as did continued DJ success, touring across Europe, the USA, and Australasia, and landing a 12-week residency curating line-ups at London’s XOYO.
JOY, their next album-length project, was released in 2021. Written during the depths of the pandemic and global lockdowns, the album was designed to replicate the hedonism and thrill of performing live to large audiences. Although they couldn’t road-test their demos as usual, JOY still captured the euphoria of the dancefloor and was nominated for DJ Mag Best of British Best Album. One track in particular - the garage-influenced Eros - shaped the direction of their 2022 release Pressure, which leaned more heavily into their garage and pirate radio roots.
The following years saw Dusky continue to evolve artistically, notably through their label 17 Steps, launched in 2014. Marking its 10-year anniversary in 2024 - a major achievement for an underground, niche-focused imprint - the label has grown from a home for their own releases to a platform for emerging and established talent alike. Over the years, 17 Steps has released tracks and remixes from artists including Nathan Micay, LTJ Bukem, Interplanetary Criminal, Denham Audio, and Shed, alongside Dusky’s own releases like Love Taking Over and Cold Heart.
To mark the anniversary, Dusky unveiled a special edition of Floor To Floor and launched an accompanying tour. Sampler 01 kicked things off with tracks from Scaefa, Machine Dion, and Kassian. The full compilation featured AIDA, J.O.S.H.U.A, Aldonna, An Avrin, Ikonika, Stones Taro, and more.
More recently, Dusky have released a string of records across 17 Steps (Trance You, Keep On / Operation), Anjunadeep (Seagulls / The Mind), fabric Originals (Spillage / Reverse), and fabricLIVE (Work – Dusky x Farsight ft. Manga Saint Hilare).
With Keep On, Nick and Alfie wanted to switch things up from their previous releases, exploring a deeper, more organic side of dance music - a space they hadn’t visited in some time. The result was a more reflective track that contrasts with the increasingly high-tempo direction of modern dance music, including in their own catalogue. These recent releases have been supported by Radio 1’s Pete Tong (Keep On was named Tong’s Essential New Tune), as well as Danny Howard, Jeremiah Asiamah, Arielle Free, and others.
Beyond the strength of their production output, Dusky have also built a substantial and highly engaged audience. Altogether, the combined streaming performance of their catalogue amounts to approximately 210 streams on Spotify alone, underscoring the scale and consistency of their impact across both original productions and remixes. Their track Careless has surpassed 18 million streams, reflecting their broad appeal. Other standout releases have also performed strongly, including Ingrid Is a Hybrid (11.7M streams), Skin Deep (10.6M), Sort It Out Sharon (8.2M), and Cold Heart (over 6M across versions).
They continue to secure placements across some of Spotify’s most prominent dance playlists, including mint, Brain Food, Chill Tracks, Deep House Relax, Housewerk, and Massive Dance Hits. More recently, they were also selected as the cover artist for Spotify’s alternative electronic playlist Altar, further reinforcing their presence on the platform.
As a result, they have become highly in-demand DJs, regularly performing to thousands of fans at major venues including The Warehouse Project in Manchester, Amnesia Ibiza, The Concourse Project in Austin, Fabric in London, and Watergate in Berlin, as well as at leading international festivals such as Creamfields, Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Glastonbury.
