March 9th: Mountain View and Lynn – Meet and park at Mountain View, off Middleton Drive around Confederate Cemetery/Starks Obelisk Monument
Learn about New River Coal Operators, African American Community Leaders, early Charleston Industrialists, a Plantation owner and more. This area will give you great views over downtown Charleston and the Kanawha Valley as we walk along the ridge line.
Coming Up:
April 13th: Jefferies Hill Country – Meet and park at Green Building on Knapper Drive. After we meet, you can drive to the top of Hall Lane where parking is limited.
This predominantly African American burial section is the final resting place of an internationally famous surgeon, national business leaders and civil rights leaders. We will be planting a tree in honor of Mrs Elizabeth (Mason) Harden Gilmore and Arbor Day. Great views, we will also discover a giant sassafras tree.
May 11th: Women of the Old Circle and Historic District – Meet and park at Mausoleum/Office Administration Building.
On Mother’s Day we will walk on the grass inside the Old Circle with special reference to the women buried here. This area is the oldest part of the cemetery, home to some of the most ornate monuments, and two state champion trees.
June 8th: Davis and Lilly Loop – Meet and park at Farley Angel Monument at entrance to Lilly Drive.
This is a beautiful peaceful nook in the Cemetery. We will pass or be near graves of pioneer Kanawha Valley residents, tragic car crash victims, musicians, a confederate officer, murderer’s and more. As well as the existing mature trees, this area has new plantings of trees and shrubs of Asian origin.

Wanting some more vigorous exercise? Join the weekly walking and running group from March the 11th until the end of October that meets every Tuesday at 5.30pm. All levels of walkers and runners (and sometimes there dogs) come and enjoy the over 5 miles of quiet internal roads with a view. Meet and park at Mausoleum/Office Administration Building.
