Sunday 11/1 Help Create a Fast-Growth Mini-Forest Dobbs Ferry Chauncey Park
About this Event
In preparation spring 2027 volunteer events to plant a unique, fast-growing Miyawaki Mini-Forest in Dobbs Ferry, volunteers are needed to first undertake the vital and hard work of preparing the area for planting.
The initial events in fall-winter 2026 will involve:
--digging the large, rectangular hole which will be the eventual mini-forest planting area
--preparing and conditioning the soil
--back-filling the hole with the upgraded soil
--adding a fence around the planting area
Spring 2027 follow-up events will involve any final site preparation and then planting of native forest species following the Miyawaki method of planting which promotes faster-than-normal growth of native trees and shrubs.
A limited number of shovels and pick-axes will be available from the Conservation Advisory Board, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. Work gloves, long sleeves, long pants, sturdy shoes and bug spray are recommended.
This project was made possible thanks to the generous funding of a Greater Irvington Land Trust grant and the Village of Dobbs Ferry, including prize money allocated from the Resilient Rivertowns 2026 Earth-Month Scavenger Hunt winnings.
