The Clemens Center will offer a Summer Theatre Camp in 2026, for students entering grades 9-12. The camp will run from June 29 – July 25, with classes offered for Writers, Stage Technicians, Costumers and Actors.
Classes are 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Monday- Friday, at the Clemens Center, with performances on July 24 and July 25.
– Writers will attend camp from June 29 – July 17 (optional attendance July 20-25)
– Stage Technicians, Costumers, and Actors will attend from July 6 – July 25
– Performances are Friday, July 24 at 7:30pm & Saturday, July 25 at 2:00pm
Writers: Writers will adapt public domain one-act plays to reflect modern life. Writers will interact with the actors to learn how actors use the script to create their character. Workshop will be conducted by a communications professional with decades of theatre experience.
Stage Technicians: Stage Technicians will learn lighting and sound design and color theory from the Clemens Center’s lighting and audio technicians. They will be assigned to design light and sound for a one-act play. Tech students will also assist with any events in the theater while the camp is in session.
Costumers: Costumers will learn costume design from a 2009 graduate of the Savanna College of Art and Design who has been designing costumes and taking fashion commissions in the Detroit area since 2009. The costumers will design and build a number of costumes for the performances.
Actors: With the growing popularity of puppetry in professional theatre (as seen in productions like War Horse, The Lion King and Life of Pi), actors will be introduced to the art of performing with puppets. They will incorporate puppets into their scenes and receive guidance from a seasoned local actor with decades of experience. This mentor will support them through scene work as they learn both their one-act plays and the techniques for effective puppet manipulation.
The final week of the camp, including performances, will take place in Powers Theater.
Theatre Camp costs $275.00 per student. This includes 2 complimentary tickets to one of the Theatre Camp performances. Snacks will be provided during camp.
