Summer of Riesling: Varietal Focus Tasting Masterclass- Feat: Hye Meadow
About this Event
One of a kind, once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the world's most terroir-transparent grape through a curated selection of mature vintages, rare bottlings, and benchmark examples from the greatest Riesling-producing regions on earth!
Join us at Somm Space for an extraordinary deep dive into Riesling, presented by Uncorked Vintage Academia. This immersive tasting explores the remarkable versatility of one of the wine world's most expressive and age-worthy grape varieties, from bone-dry, mineral-driven wines and traditional-method sparkling Rieslings to off-dry classics, noble sweet wines, and legendary late-harvest expressions.
The centerpiece of the evening is a rare educational journey through Riesling's extraordinary ability to reflect place. Few grape varieties communicate terroir with such precision, allowing us to examine how climate, geology, elevation, and winemaking philosophy shape wines that can be dramatically different while sharing the same varietal identity. Throughout the tasting, we will explore Riesling's unique capacity to transmit vineyard character, whether grown on steep slate slopes overlooking a river valley, ancient limestone ridges, volcanic soils, or high-elevation mountain vineyards.
We will also examine one of wine's greatest paradoxes: how a grape capable of producing some of the lightest and most delicate wines in the world can also create some of the longest-lived. Along the way, we'll discuss the development of bottle age, the role of acidity in longevity, the emergence of tertiary characteristics, and the chemistry behind Riesling's remarkable evolution over decades.
Beyond Germany, we'll travel the world through Riesling, tasting more than 20 wines from multiple countries and a wide range of winegrowing regions. Along the way, we'll compare climate, terroir, and winemaking approaches to discover how dramatically this grape can express itself across the globe.
Featured regions include:
Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Romania, Australia, United States, Canada, New Zealand, Chile and other emerging Riesling regions from around the world.
Our featured special guest winemaker Mike Batek of Hye Meadow Winery will help us navigate Riesling's challenges in Texas, as well as encompass discussions on:
The history of Riesling from its medieval origins to its modern renaissance
Dry versus sweet winemaking philosophies
Noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) and dessert wine production
Icewine and frozen-grape harvesting techniques
Traditional-method sparkling Riesling and Sekt production
Why Riesling remains one of the most age-worthy white wines in the world
Whether you're a devoted Riesling enthusiast or simply curious about why many wine professionals consider it the world's greatest white grape variety, this is a rare opportunity to experience its incredible range through benchmark examples, mature vintages, and wines seldom available to the public.
One grape. Centuries of history. Endless expressions of place.
We look forward to sharing this unforgettable tasting with you. 🍷
