About The 45th Parallel Ensemble: Chris Nemeth (violin), Laura Gallucci (viola), and Tim Garrett (cello)
While we'd known one another for several years as core members of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, our first foray as a trio proper was at a wedding "gig" back in the spring of 2020. A proverbial "nightmare of a gig," to be clear. For one thing, one of the musicians in the fired quartet had the date wrong and simply failed to show up. So while the wedding party was preparing to proceed down the aisle, we had the wedding planner scramble to print out the missing parts. Chris and Laura gamely re-arranged and "sight-read" the missing music/parts for the ceremony on the spot.
All the while there was a heavy, gusting mist light rain, really) that was soaking everything... us, our instruments, our bows, our music...and rendering the instruments basically unplayable. No amount of rosin could make the bow hair cut through the moisture and properly grip the string. (In the days following the gig, the neck on Chris' instrument loosened, gave way, and collapsed. He ended up parting with the fiddle.)
But in spite of this, the three of us survived, found a way to make some stirring music, and forged a connection rooted in admiration and respect.
We have remained together...making interesting music with interesting people, ever since.
