Summer Moose Day allows anyone to adopt a route, hike that route, and record how many moose or signs of moose you see on July 18 or 19.
Registration is now open and closes on July 10. This year we have routes in the Vedauwoo/Happy Jack, Arlington, and Snowy Range areas.
Volunteers select routes and hike those routes to record all observations of moose or signs of moose. These can include tracks/hoofprints, bed areas, scat droppings and browse on aspen and willows. To survey while moose are most active, participants are asked to get to their routes as early as dawn and to complete their surveys before the afternoon.
New participants are required to take the online training and pass a quiz before Moose Day. Previous participants are encouraged to complete the training to stay up to date.
The data gathered from Winter and Summer Moose Day are shared with biologists at UW. These biologists use the data collected by community scientists to further their understanding of the population densities of local moose, their reproductive rates, their ranges and how these variables change over time.
