ABOUT THE FILM:
Adela Has Not Had Supper Yet (Adéla ještě nevečeřela)
August 20, 9 pm | Gate opens at 8:30 am (Rain Date: August 27)
Directed by Oldřich Lipský (1978) | 105 min., Czech with English subtitles
The film is one of the most beloved classics of Czech cinema—a delightfully inventive blend of detective mystery, comedy, fantasy, and steampunk adventure. Directed by Oldřich Lipský and written by Jiří Brdečka, the 1978 cult favorite lovingly spoofs American detective stories while celebrating the charm and eccentricity of turn-of-the-century Prague.
When legendary American detective Nick Carter arrives in Prague to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a countess's dog, he joins forces with the easygoing Commissioner Ledvina. Their investigation soon uncovers a diabolical plot involving the sinister Baron von Kratzmar and his extraordinary creation—Adela, a gigantic carnivorous plant with a voracious appetite. As bizarre inventions, daring escapes, and laugh-out-loud gags unfold, the unlikely detectives race to stop the villain before Adela's next meal.
Filled with clever visual humor, unforgettable performances, and imaginative special effects by legendary surrealist artist Jan Švankmajer, the film remains a timeless showcase of Czech creativity and wit. Its playful blend of suspense, slapstick, and fantasy has delighted audiences around the world for decades and earned it recognition as one of the defining comedies of Czech cinema.
