About this Event
Sarah E Williams (www.writtenwithwilliams.com) presents this limited five session writing course for children aged 8-13. In each two hour session healthy drinks and snacks will be provided. By the end of these five sessions each child will understand lots of different writing techniques, how to plan and will have done a lot of fun writing exercises!
Spaces are limited to six places for this course. We run various childrens courses and sessions in The Blue House Bookshop. Keep an eye out for our other sessions and let us know if you'd like to see anything in particular!
The structure of this course is as follows:
Session one: introduction. What makes a good mystery? We'll look at a mystery story - especially the ones where you didn't see it coming! I'll send the title of a book round that we will all try to read before this course and we'll have a look at how they make the mystery work!
Session two: setting clues... How do writers drop enough clues to draw you in, but keep you guessing?! We'll look into this and find the clues to our own mystery in the bookshop too...
Session three: suspect. Every mystery needs suspicious characters! Those characters we just don't trust and others that maybe seem too perfect. We'll learn how to make these characters realistic, as well as suspicious.
Session four: plotting the mystery! Mysteries need to be well planned so we know when the main characters find the clues and when they'll finally reveal the secrets. In this class we'll plot a mystery story, ready to be written.
Session five: writing a mystery adventure story! This is where all our plans and exercises become a story! We will come into this session with a good idea of what it takes to write a story, then we'll spend time writing together through exercises and telling stories of our own!
