For one night only, three legendary acts will share the same stage for an incredible night of music at Fruitlands Museum. Susan Werner, the Nields, and Seth Glier will share some of their incredible catalogues of songs.
Susan Werner
Over the course of her twenty-five-year career, Susan Werner has earned a reputation as “one of the most innovative songwriters working today” (Chicago Tribune). With formidable chops on guitar (she began playing at age 5) and piano (she was a guest on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz), along with a graduate degree in voice performance, her shows are a one-woman master class in musicianship. Although best known as an acoustic songwriter that came up through coffeehouses and folk festivals, the Chicago-based artist has written songs in the style of Gershwin and Cole Porter (I Can’t Be New, 2004), gospel music (The Gospel Truth, 2007), traditional Cuban “son” (An American In Havana, 2016), and New Orleans junk piano (NOLA, 2019). In 2014 she composed the music and lyrics to the musical theater score Bull Durham, The Musical (MGM). Her songs have been recorded by Tom Jones, Michael Feinstein, and Shemekia Copeland, and her latest recording of originals, The Birds of Florida, took flight in 2022.
The Nields
The Nields have carved out a singular style that combines pop craftsmanship, folk sensibility, ‘60’s classic rock and ‘90’s alternative––always with an intelligent (occasionally humorous) take on the curve balls that life continually serves up. It’s a sound Apple Music describes as “equal parts The Beatles, the cranberries and Joni Mitchell.” With their finely tuned melodies and the natural exuberance, 21 albums, major and independent record and publishing deals, performances with 10,000 Maniacs, The Band, James Taylor, and the Indigo Girls, the Nields have indeed paid their dues, to answer the question they pose in their most beloved song “Easy People.” (“Haven’t I paid my dues by now? And don’t I get the right to choose?”)
With the release of their latest album, Circle of Days (June 2023), the Nields offer their most ambitious yet familiar collection to date. During the pandemic, Nerissa and Katryna took their dogs on a daily walk to a lake in the woods near their homes in Western Massachusetts. Katryna, a photographer, took a picture of the lake in the same location every day. As they walked, they talked about the new album they wanted to make. What if there were a song for every month in the calendar year?
Seth Glier
The earth speaks to us in a myriad of ways — through ice cores, through uplift and erosion, through tree rings — languages we have the potential to restore our literacy in. Reconnecting with these quiet messages has set Seth Glier, an avid mushroom forager and a Grammy-nominated artist from Western Massachusetts, on a path of channeling nature’s longing for communion with humanity into song. His new album Everything is a collection of eight songs inviting us to imagine a future in which humans and the planet are re-aligned into mutual restoration.
Seth’s gifts are an innate curiosity and a fierce desire to connect with other people. His musical acumen provides him with a vehicle for both. He was worked as a cultural diplomat for the US State Department and collaborated with musicians in Ukraine, Mongolia, China, and Mexico. Seth has shared the bill with a diverse list of artists ranging from the likes of Ronnie Spector, James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, & Glen Campbell. As a producer, music director, or studio musician he has collaborated with Sophie B. Hawkins, Tom Rush, Antje Duvekot, Richard Shindell, Doctora Qingona, Dar Williams, Nick Carter, & Cyndi Lauper. Seth is a five-time Independent Music Award winner and received a Grammy nomination for his album The Next Right Thing. With a commitment to using songwriting as a tool for positive change, he has written with the students in Parkland, FL for the “Parkland Project,” cowritten with soldiers at Walter Reed, and is an advocate for autism awareness citing his autistic brother Jamie as his greatest non-musical-musical influence.
The concert begins at 7pm. Gates open 6pm.
This Summer Concert is presented on the lawn on Fruitlands. Bring your own blanket, lawn chairs and picnic basket. There is plenty of room on the concert lawn to spread out and get comfortable. Before the concert starts, enjoy a picnic on the lawn and visit the exhibitions on view in the Galleries which will be open from 6-7pm.
