Sumi-e means Ink Painting in Japanese. This beloved and ancient art form was practiced by Buddhist monks as a form of meditation and continues to grow in popularity worldwide. The Wild Orchid is one of the Four Gentlemen and represents Spring. Traditional brushes and ink are used to make basic strokes including the orchid leaf stroke, bamboo leaf stroke and bone or stem stroke. A Lily and Dragonfly are also included in the lesson.
