CONTENT DESCRIPTION: Join us for our next Continuing Education event, “Suicide Assessment, Treatment, & Management in Behavioral Health Practice.” This training event will be offered in two formats - either live in person or via webinar (Zoom).
This training is designed to provide education in regard to the assessment, treatment, and management of suicidality for Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors and Licensed Professional Counselor Associates. It is intended to meet criteria for continuing education credit for LPCAs and LPCCs per 201 KAR 36:030, Section 2(1), for which CE approval application has been made.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
Define suicide and discuss the importance of suicide screening/assessment. Discuss the impact the Pandemic has had on suicide. Identify evidence-based and/or best practice suicide screening and assessment instruments commonly utilized in behavioral health treatment.
Demonstrate ability to understand and incorporate evidence-based clinical care practice guidelines utilized in behavioral health treatment of suicidal individuals or individuals deemed “at-risk” of suicidal behaviors.
Explain how to manage treatment of individuals with suicidal risk and the importance of designing a collaborative safety plan.
Describe special populations whose members may be at heightened risk and best practice considerations for clinical treatment thereof for those individuals.
Recognize the signs that someone may be thinking of suicide. Participants will be able to identify the things that they may SEE, HEAR, SENSE or LEARN from an individual that indicates they may have thoughts of suicide.
Demonstrate via verbalization and role play an understanding and basic competency in the TALK steps utilized to recognize, acknowledge and intervene in situations involving persons with thoughts of suicide. Participants will be able to watch scripted videos and then participate in active role play scenarios in which they work.
Verbalize and understanding of the ways in which we MISS, DISMISS and AVOID the invitations to intervene of those with thoughts of suicide.
PRESENTER BIOS:

Mark Hamm
M.Ed, NCC, LPCC-S
Mark Hamm is the co-founder of Phoenix Preferred Care in 1998 and is proud of the reputation that PPC has built in the community over the past 25 years as well as its ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality behavioral health services to those who entrust us with their care.
In addition to his duties as CEO of Phoenix Preferred Care, Mark provides therapy for clients, as well as clinical supervision and continuing education training for a staff of more than 45 employees. Mark has experience working with a wide array of clinical concerns to a diverse range of clients. He currently works with physicians, law enforcement/first responders, those who have experienced trauma, young professionals and athletes focusing on post-traumatic growth, performance, and wellness.
Mark is a Managing Partner for ZL Consulting, LLC which provides consulting, training and clinical work for individuals, families and professionals nationwide. He is also currently an EAP Area Clinician for the Louisville Division of the Drug Enforcement Agency, for whom he consults, trains, and provides clinical work. Mark is also the Wellness Coordinator for Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital’s Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Residency programs, where he provides wellness programming, training, and counseling.

Tina Hamm
M.Ed., NCC, LPCC-S, RPT-S™
Tina Hamm is the co-founder of Phoenix Preferred Care, which has provided behavioral health services to Pulaski County’s children and families for more than 25 years. There, she serves as chief financial officer as well as a licensed professional clinical counselor supervisor (LPCC-S). As such, she educates clinicians, consults for programs across the state, and oversees more than 45 employees who provide services to nearly 1,100 individuals annually at home, school, in the community and via telehealth. She is the Managing partner for ZL Collective Consulting, LLC which currently provides consulting, training and clinical work for individuals and professionals nationwide. She recently became an Area Clinician for the Louisville Division DEA EAP in which she consults, collaborates, trains and provides clinical work for the DEA.

Hamm received her master’s degree in education with an emphasis in mental health counseling from Western Kentucky University in 2005. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Eastern Kentucky University in 1997.

She is past president of Somerset-Pulaski Morning Rotary and continues to be an active member. She is a member of the Association for Play Therapy, Kentucky Association for Play Therapy and the Kentucky Counseling Association She is currently serving as a member of the Somerset-Pulaski Economic Development Authority Board of Directors (SPEDA). Along with her husband, Mark, she is a lifelong resident of Pulaski County. She has two daughters, Zoey and Lily, who are pursuing their post-secondary education.
Justin Smith
MA, NCC, LPCC-S, RPT-S™, ACS
Justin is the owner and operator of Bright Star Consultation, LLC in Louisville, KY. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Services and Counseling from Lindsey Wilson College in 2005. He continued his education by receiving a Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling in 2013 from the University of the Cumberlands.
Justin has been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2013 and also became a National Certified Counselor in 2015. He currently serves as Phoenix Preferred Care’s Director of Staff Development. He earned the Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ credential in 2019 and is also a Certified AutPlay Therapy Provider (since 2021). In 2024, he became an Approved Clinical Supervisor via the National Board for Certified Counselors and in 2025 completed EMDR Training. He also manages PPC’s Continuing Education programs and has developed and led numerous trainings on an array of topics for mental health professionals and the community at large.
Justin is most interested in using Child Centered Play Therapy and EMDR with children who have experienced trauma or exhibit challenging behaviors due to anxiety/life stressors, those with special needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. He primarily sees clients in the Louisville metro area. He is a member of the Association for Play Therapy, Kentucky Association for Play Therapy (serving on the Board of Directors as the Continuing Education Director), Kentucky Counseling Association, Kentucky Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and Kentucky Association for LGBT Issues in Counseling. He has previously held memberships in the Middle Cumberland Counseling Association, Somerset-Pulaski Morning Rotary Club, Louisville Suburban Rotary Club, Lake Cumberland Housing Authority Family Self-Sufficiency Committee, and the Pulaski County Suicide Prevention Alliance.

CE Hours will be awarded to those participants who attend and participate in the entire training event, and return a completed program evaluation. No partial credit will be awarded.
Application has been made for approval by the Kentucky LPC Board as applicable for continuing education credit for LPCAs and LPCCs per 201 KAR 36:030, Section 2(1).
