Sugar Skull Molding Workshop w/ Karina Martinez

Please join us for a FREE workshop led by local artist Karina Martinez to learn how to mold traditional sugar skulls out of actual sugar! The workshop location is at Art Project Roanoke at 101 Campbell Ave SW Roanoke VA 24011 from 6-8pm on Tuesday, Oct 13.

Participants will not be taking home their creations after the workshop, as they need to sit and dry before being moved. This is a Part 1 of 2 sugar skull workshops. The second workshop has a separate registration link. It will be held at Golden Cactus on October 20 from 6-8pm and is the sugar skull decorating workshop. You do not have to attend both workshops.

If participants would like to take home their sugar skull, our volunteers will make pick-up arrangements on a later date with you depending on your availability to attend the Part 2 decorating workshop and/or the Lantern Festival & Parade on Oct 24.

This workshop is provided today through the Arts Connect Neighbors program with funding from the City of Roanoke and the National Endowment for the Arts.

These sugar skulls will be used in the Old Southwest Halloween Lantern Festival on October 24. At the festival The Latinas Network will be creating a community ofrenda to honor our loved ones who have passed away and these skulls will be included as decorations for it. An ofrenda is a significant part of the Día de Los Muertos tradition celebrated throughout parts of Latin America on Nov 1 and 2. Please feel free to contribute to our community ofrenda by bringing a photo of a loved one of your own to the festival.
