Sugar Skull Decorating Workshop with Karina Martinez

Please join us for a FREE workshop led by local artist Karina Martinez to learn how to decorate traditional sugar skulls! The workshop will be held at Golden Cactus Brewing at 214 5th St SW Roanoke VA 24016 from 6-8pm on Tuesday, Oct 20.

Attendees will be decorating sugar skulls that were made in Karina's sugar skull molding working the week prior. You do not have to have attended the first workshop to participiate in this one.

Participants will not be taking home their creations directly after the workshop, as they need to sit and dry before being moved.

The plan is for these sugar skulls to be used in the Old Southwest Halloween Lantern Festival on October 24. At the festival The Latinas Network will be creating a community ofrenda to honor our loved ones who have passed away and these skulls will be included as decorations for it. An ofrenda is a significant part of the Día de Los Muertos tradition celebrated throughout parts of Latin America on Nov 1 and 2. Please feel free to contribute to our community ofrenda by bringing a photo of a loved one of your own to the festival.

If workshop participants would like to take home their sugar skull, our volunteers will make pick-up arrangements on a later date with you depending on your availability to attend the Lantern Festival & Parade on Oct 24.
