Mary Roberts, Windcrest Farm, will lead us through a discussion on the change from summer to fall in one of the busiest and most useful transition periods in the garden. While summer crops are still being produced, gardeners must decide what to keep, what to remove, what to propagate, and what to plant for the cooler months ahead.

In this class, we will walk through the seasonal tasks that help a garden continue producing through fall and winter while preparing the soil, plants, and gardener for next spring. Learn how to evaluate fading summer crops, collect and store seeds, take cuttings from favorite plants, and care for fall and overwintering vegetables. We will also discuss when to clear beds, when to leave healthy plants standing, and how cover crops can protect and improve unused garden space.

The class will include practical guidance on overwintering vegetables, frost protection, soil preparation, garden cleanup, recordkeeping, and planning next year’s garden while this year’s successes and problems are still fresh in your mind.

Participants will leave with a seasonal garden checklist, and a clearer plan for carrying the garden successfully from late summer into spring.
