Substate Christmas Special: Darren Connell & Friends

Headlining is Darren Connell, the much-loved star of BBC Scotland’s Scot Squad and the man behind Bobby Muir. A Scottish BAFTA New Talent Award nominee, Darren has become one of Scotland’s most in-demand live comedians, selling out his Glasgow Comedy Festival debut before adding extra dates to meet demand. Expect brilliant storytelling, fearless crowd work and the kind of honest, unpredictable comedy that has made him a firm favourite across the country.
Your host for the night is Jack Traynor — one of Scotland’s fastest-rising comedy stars and a genuine force on the international roast scene. Jack is a former Roast Battle League MVP, ranked fourth in the world in the Roast Battle League, and one of only two European acts invited to perform in the Best of the Roast Battle League in Los Angeles. He stormed the infamous LA Comedy Store, earned praise from K*ll Tony host and roast royalty Tony Hinchcliffe, and has also supported Netflix and The Late Show star Daniel Sloss. Sharp, energetic and relentlessly funny, Jack is the perfect man to keep the Christmas chaos under control.
Joining them is Daniel Petrie — winner of the 2023 Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award, a Chortle Student Comedy Award finalist, BBC New Comedy Awards featured act and the first Scottish comedian selected for the prestigious Pleasance Reserve at the Edinburgh Fringe. A working NHS doctor and hugely gifted stand-up, Daniel has also opened for Connor Burns across the UK, including at the Edinburgh Playhouse. The Scotsman has called him “impressively relaxed and likeable,” while Daniel Sloss simply labelled him “scarily good.”
Also on the bill is Paddy Linton, one of Glasgow’s most exciting rising talents and a familiar face from Blackfriars Comedy’s cult gong show, Just One More Gong. A regular at some of the country’s best comedy rooms, Paddy is also a resident host at Craicfriars Comedy, Merchant City Comedy and Radio Ha Ha. His sharp observations and working-class Glasgow storytelling have made him a standout act on the Scottish circuit.
Completing the line-up is Vanessa Correia, winner of the Substate New Comedy Showdown and a Just One More Gong champion. Fresh from proving herself against the best new talent on the circuit, Vanessa brings warm, witty and effortlessly funny stand-up to the Substate stage — the perfect final piece of a Christmas comedy line-up packed with talent.
One night. Five brilliant acts. Zero Christmas cracker jokes guaranteed.
