Sublime is one of the most influential bands to emerge from the 1990s alternative rock and ska-punk scene. Formed in Long Beach, California in 1988, Sublime was originally composed of vocalist and guitarist Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson, and drummer Bud Gaugh. The band built a loyal grassroots following throughout Southern California by blending punk, reggae, ska, hip-hop, and surf rock into a laid-back yet energetic sound. Early releases like 40oz. to Freedom (1992) and Robbin’ the Hood (1994) circulated heavily through college radio stations and underground tape trading, helping Sublime gain cult status before mainstream recognition.

Sublime’s breakthrough arrived with their self-titled third album Sublime, released in 1996. The record featured several of the band’s biggest hits, including “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way,” songs that became staples of alternative and rock radio throughout the late 1990s. Tragically, Bradley Nowell passed away shortly before the album’s release, but the record went on to sell millions of copies and cement Sublime’s legacy as pioneers of the ska-punk and reggae-rock crossover sound. Over the years, their music has remained a defining influence on bands blending punk energy with reggae rhythms.

Decades after their original rise, Sublime’s music continues to resonate with fans across generations. The band reunited in recent years with Bradley Nowell’s son Jakob Nowell stepping in as lead vocalist, bringing new life to the group’s catalog while honoring its roots. With timeless songs, festival appearances, and renewed touring activity, Sublime remains a major presence in alternative music culture and continues to attract audiences eager to experience their iconic West Coast sound live.
