Studying and Conserving Birds through Banding: National and Local Efforts
This program will include an overview of the Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL), a long-standing program under the U.S Geological Survey’s Ecosystems Mission Area that supports the collection of data on banded and marked birds across North America, manages vast repositories of such data, and produces and distributes the information needed to understand and track changes in bird populations.
Our speakers will then share about the Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) program, an intercontinental banding project focused on breeding bird populations, which Wissahickon Trails has contributed to since 2015. You’ll hear about the importance of this project, lessons learned, and highlights from over a decade of local banding efforts.
Speaker Bios:
Margaret Rohde, Conservation Manager, Wissahickon Trails.
Margaret started birding at an early age, and after earning a degree in Environmental Studies at Washington College, worked on bird banding and population projects in NJ, FL, NY, MD, and PA. She is the Conservation Manager for Wissahickon Trails and oversees trail and preserve maintenance, habitat restoration, climate change adaptation and trail accessibility planning, as well as the bird conservation program (and sometimes leads hikes and bird walks!). She is a North American Banding Council Certified Bander, Vice President of Liberty Bird Alliance, and 3rd Vice President of the Eastern Bird Banding Association.
Kristy Morley, Senior Naturalist, Wissahickon Trails
A lifelong resident of the Delaware Valley (if you don’t count the two years spent in Minnesota), Kristy grew up with Herrontown Woods as her backyard, fostering an early love of nature and the outdoors. An extreme bird nerd and avid photographer, Kristy enjoys helping people to understand how everything is connected in the natural world. In her role as Senior Naturalist at Wissahickon Trails, Kristy leads a variety of nature based “walks & talks” and manages the Community Science Program, where volunteers monitor the ecology of Wissahickon Trails properties in a variety of projects. Kristy is a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist and the Christmas Bird Count Compiler for the Liberty Bird Alliance circle.
Stephanie Egger, Biologist, U.S Geological Survey, Bird Banding Laboratory
Stephanie is a biologist at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL), located at the Eastern Ecological Science Center in Laurel, MD, but a lifelong resident of the greater Philadelphia region.
Stephanie is responsible for issuing and administering federal bird banding permits, curating bird banding and encounter reports within the BBL data management system, providing biological support to banders, and supporting ornithological/scientific needs of the BBL projects and its operations. Locally, Stephanie is on the Leadership Team for Bird Safe Philly (BSP) and coordinates retrofitting projects to reduce bird collisions from glass, manages and qa/qc data collected through BSP monitoring efforts, and administers the Bird Safe Schools program. She is also on the board for Liberty Bird Alliance serving as the Bird Safe Philly committee chair.
